Three civilians were killed after the Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate firing and artillery shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) opposite Jammu and Kashmir on the night of May 6–7, the Indian Army confirmed.

According to an official statement, Pakistan’s actions included arbitrary shelling of civilian areas, prompting the Indian Army to respond in a “proportionate manner.” The incident came just hours after India executed precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

“These acts of aggression led to the tragic loss of three innocent civilian lives. Indian forces are responding appropriately,” the Army said.

The Indian strikes under Operation Sindoor were the deepest incursion into Pakistan’s undisputed territory since the 1971 war, CNN reported. Among the locations struck were Ahmadpur East and Muridke in Punjab, Pakistan. ANI sources revealed that a total of nine terror targets were hit—four inside Pakistan, including Bahawalpur and Sialkot, and five in PoJK—using precision munitions and loitering drones in a tri-services operation.

The Ministry of Defence stated the strikes were a direct response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen. The operation aimed to neutralize senior leaders of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), who were involved in orchestrating attacks on Indian soil.

The Indian government emphasized the measured nature of the strikes, stating, “Our actions have been focused, measured, and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities were targeted.”

Despite India’s restrained and calculated military response, Pakistan escalated tensions by violating the Ceasefire Agreement within hours. Artillery was fired in the Bhimber Gali area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch-Rajouri sector.

In a post on X, the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI) wrote, “Pakistan again violates the Ceasefire Agreement by firing artillery in Bhimber Gali in the Poonch-Rajouri area. Indian Army is responding appropriately in a calibrated manner.”

India has reaffirmed its commitment to holding those responsible for terrorism accountable while continuing to exercise strategic restraint.
